Inside the care suite, patients consult with nurses and physicians in a living room setting while facing a large flat-panel monitor on which can be displayed the electronic health record (EHR), diagnostic test results, educational videos and the patient’s fitness center data for compliance with exercise routines. The patient’s vital signs are captured and automatically uploaded to the EHR as are all pharmacy transactions. All information (including ongoing chart notes) is shared with the patient.

Lean design principles have been employed to enhance productivity and eliminate waste. In this case, doing everything the patient needs at one time without the provider flitting back and forth between several patients actually increases throughput, reduces medical error and enhances patient satisfaction.
